Our School Council

A school council provides a meaningful way in which pupils can voice their opinions and have their views taken into account in decisions that impact upon them. Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) -Respect for views of the child.

At Metheringham Primary School, our school council is a group of children that represents the views of all our pupils. It gives our children the opportunity to have their voices heard and be part of the whole school community. They help to makes decisions about school life and organise projects that support learning and personal development, such as organising charity events, theme days or representing the school at outside events.

We value the opinions of our pupils and our school council gives pupils a forum to share these opinions with our school council teacher representatives, Headteacher and other members of staff.

Who are the School Council representatives this year?

At Metheringham Primary School, we respect and value the fundamental British values of democracy and ensure the views and opinions of our pupils are expressed. At the beginning of the Autumn Term, the children elect school council members – two from each class.  All pupils are invited to stand as School Council representatives and are voted for fairly and democratically by their peers. The Chair, Vice Chair and Treasurer are then voted for by the elected members of the School Council.

The School Council meets fortnightly to discuss issues raised by the children and ideas to help improve our school even further.  The Chair, Vice Chair and Treasurer also interact regularly with other staff members of our school community to further their personal development skills in their role.  We believe our School Council are very effective in helping bring about positive changes in the life of our school!

Meet the teacher representatives

We are very proud to lead our School Council. We have amazing children in our school who have lots of great ideas on how we can work together to make a better school.  They do all the hard work and like to get involved as much as possible…making our job a little easier! At Metheringham Primary School, we “INSPIRE, BELIEVE and ACHIEVE” and through our school council work, we really do! We have children from Year 6 all the way down to Year 1. We want to make sure that all children’s voices are heard in our school.  We meet regularly to discuss ideas and events. We are very fortunate to work with a great group of children this year and we know we are going to achieve a lot for our school!

School council aims:

• To meet regularly to discuss their views and be heard.
• To organise whole school and class events
• To organise charity days and themed events
• To make sure our school is a happy and safe place for all of our children
• To make sure children have a place to voice their concerns, opinions, and thoughts
• To encourage all children in school to suggest ideas and improvements
• To ensure any suggestions or concerns are listened to and acted upon.

What have we been doing?

• School council met for the first time last week after being democratically elected by their peers
• Key roles in the council were voted for
• Class representatives fed back to their classes
• Councillors are planning to meet with key staff members in the school to find out how they do their jobs – this will help them to carry out their elected roles this year
• We will invite one of our lovely governors in to meet the new school council and discuss plans for the year.
• Plan for Road Safety Week and Children in Need.
• Meeting with LCC Rcyling team and feedback in a school council assembly to the whole school
• Organise a Children in Need Fundraising Event.
• Raise money for the Poppy Appeal by selling poppies
